Different ethnic groups forming part of the Mayan race inhabited the place that we currently know as the City of Campeche; 17 of which still inhabit the area.
The capital city of the province called Can Pech, was conquered by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba on March 22, 1517 and received the name of San Lázaro. Later on, Francisco de Montejo "the young one', recognized it as Villa de San Francisco de Campeche, on October 4, 1540.
The richness and complexity characterizing the things Mexican are the result of the syncretic and mestizo culture that took place with the arrival of the Spaniards; Campeche is an example of it. The city is a perfect representation of the baroque colonial architecture which, in this case combines the important maritime trade with the presence of religious and military buildings of great span, with the precedents of Mayan development, giving place to a space in which we appreciate the architecture shown by the most important historical moments of the country, reason for which it was recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage in 1999.
The House of the Guard or House of the Warrior, currently the Hotel Hacienda Puerta Campeche, is located in the Historical Center of the City and is a sample of the buildings mentioned above. Between 18th. and 59th. streets (formerly De la Muralla and America respectively) we find ourselves in a house of arches, patios and corridors, that are part of the traditional colonial baroque of regular lines. The building was identified for the first time on a map done by the military engineer Agustín Crane, dating back to 1779.
In 1870, due to its excellent location across from the Gate to Land, don Eligio Guerrero Quero established an imports wholesale store known as El Bronce, which stored high quality wines and champagne; in addition to serving as granary for corn, rice lentils and salt.
Later on it became the first soap factory, also belonging to the Guerrero family.
After the demise of don Eligio, his widow kept the property for a while as sisal exporter and, subsequently turned it into a lodge.
It was acquired in the year 2000 by Grupo Plan to establish there he Hotel Hacienda Puerta Campeche, in order to stimulate the tourist development of the area.
